Synopsis:

Villa Lante is considered to be one of the finest examples of Mannerist Italian garden design. Construction on the estate began in 1566, with the majority of the design work by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. Villa Lante was commissioned by Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara, and references to Cardinal Gambara appear throughout the gardens. The gardens tell a story of the classical age, subsumed by chaos, and finally a restoration to order and revival of the classical age through the efforts of Cardinal Gambara.
